Our StoryOur Story

We met when we were undergraduate students at UW-Madison. We weren’t very close friends initially, but we started getting to know each other well when we both came back to spend the summer with our families in Hong Kong in 1997. Our friendship started with phone conversations and activities such as going out to dinner and movies, but through those mundane activities, we slowly realized that something was clicking and that there was something more in this relationship that we wanted to pursue.

We’ve been dating for a little over 8 years now. Our first 4 years together were relatively smooth and steady; however, we spent the following 2 years apart while Holly was working on her graduate studies in the US and Bernard working in Hong Kong. Those 2 years were the most difficult times in our relationship as maintaining a long-distance relationship half way across the world proved to be much more challenging than we had expected. Nonetheless, we made it through and we’ve been spending the past 2 years together in Hong Kong.

And now as we’re getting close to our wedding day, we look back at the past 8 years that we’ve spent together and we feel nothing but happiness and satisfaction. And we’re looking forward to spending many more years together.

Bride's StoryBride’s Story

When I first met Bernard, I had already heard many good things about him. My friends told me that he was a very generous person and he was always willing to help other people, whether it was to help someone move or teach someone how to drive. In fact, before we became close friends, he had offered to give me a ride to the airport very early in the morning one time.

One incident that I’ll never forget is the one time when Bernard and I went to Chicago on a weekend a couple months after we had first started dating. When we were sitting along the shore of Lake Michigan and chatting, someone who was riding a bike near the shoreline suddenly lost balance and was about to fall into the lake. At that very second, Bernard jumped up and ran toward that guy in an attempt to help him. In the end, Bernard wasn’t able to grab the guy before he fell into the lake, and he himself also lost balance and fell into the lake as well.

It was fall time and the lake water was quite cold, so I was of course very worried about Bernard. But at that moment, I also realized that I had found the guy that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Bernard is the most good-natured person that I’ve met, and I feel so lucky to be with him.

Groom's StoryGroom’s Story

Holly is a very lovely and caring person and she takes care of all the little things that I usually am not aware of. Hey but you might ask, most girls are born to be like that and this is what they specialize in. However, I have to tell you that Holly has some “extra-curricular” qualities that made me decide to be with her for the rest of my life.

Madison, Wisconsin has one of the coldest weather on the planet during winter. People who live in warm places like Hong Kong would find it hard to imagine what life is like there. It is kind of like living inside a freezer of an old refrigerator (not the modern one since there is a lot snow there). It was my junior year of my bachelor study; I lived about 25 minutes away from the campus by car when the weather is nice. When the weather is bad, it might take me another 20 minutes because of the traffic. There was one time that the city was hit by a snow storm and most of the stores were closed for business and the traffic went paralyzed. At the beginning, the snow storm did not border me too much since I had a very reliable Golf GTI and it never failed to start the engine even in the coldest winter morning. Bad things always do not come alone, when my reliable car got towed away by the local transportation department because of parking violation which I normally did not commit, the snowy weather really made me take this chance for granted. As a foreign student who used to take care of himself, I decided to walk back home on foot and hope I could catch a bus or something on the way back to save me a trip. Holly at the time was living in a female corporative dormitory on campus, but she insisted to come with me because she didn’t want me to walk in the cold by myself. Finally, it took us almost 90 minutes to get home and when we arrived, we were almost frozen. Holly’s face was pale and her toes could not move. She had to soak in hot water for 30 minutes before she recovered. This was only one of the cases where she spent the tough times with me and I know there will be more to come in the future, but as long as we stay together, I believe that toughest things will become easy after all.
